Freak Dancing makes TV news in Michigan

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- Northview Schools is one of the first districts in Michigan to ban a popular form of dancing at school events.

Administrators started the ban against "grinding" in September. Dancers are no longer be allowed to rub their bodies against one another in an explicit manner.

In a letter to parents, Principal Mark Thomas says the style of dance does not fit into Northview's culture and reflects poorly on the school.

"It's the right thing to do. And as an institution or an organization or a school district, we may not solve it, but we have a responsibility to teach it and to promote the right things.

I don't care if it's how we expect kids to dress when they come to school, or how to behave at our athletic events or how to interact with others and so forth. It's a matter of respect," he said.

Other West Michigan school districts warn students against suggestive dancing, but Northview is one of the first to create a policy against it

Former student at Northview
As a former Northview graduate, I can assure you that this style of dance DOES in fact, fit into Northview's culture in recent years. You can thank the lack of discipline and complete lack of competent administration for that. However, Mr. Mark Thomas, drinking & driving does not fit into a high school culture. So if you want to push for something that needs to make a cultural diference, please, be an example to students with that! Oh wait, after you got caught drinking and driving, your insincere apology must have covered that a couple years ago. (Unfortunately for the Northview community, you got to keep your job.) Also, WZZM, I am disgusting with the lack of investigation here. Have you really read the letter that was sent home to parents? It says that this type of dance is a "cultural style," and not a reflection of the students themselves, much like the internet, facebook, etc. (Yes, these examples were used.) If it is not a reflection of the students themselves and a new cultural phenomenon, let's disgrace any cultural changes, huh? That's definitely never worked in history before. I'm not saying that this type of dancing is right for students of this age, however, good luck trying to change it. The only thing that will be changed by this is student attendance at Northview's dances. The dancing style outside of the school, nor the "cultural style" will not change. In fact, it didn't at the dance they are talking about! It was still occuring throughout the dance this year. Northview trying to purge it's latest trashy reputation isn't going to change with this new "rule," that is for sure.
