“Dubstep”: non-grinding dance music. (Applause!)

If you haven’t heard of Dubstep yet…it’s likely you will. It is the underground, high energy, electronic frenzied dance music that dates back to 2000 in the experimental music studios of London. Over the past couple years it has found its way to more mainstream artists. It’s great news for school administrators. It’s almost impossible to grind to. At 138-142 beats per minute it’s fast enough to make the energizer bunny fall behind.
Originally it was primarily instrumental and not very melodic. Mainstream artists like Britney Spears, Maroon 5, LaRoux have changed that by producing “dub step” versions of their hit songs. (Check our “New Songs” feature on this site to hear what they sound like). There is a unique robotic dubstep dance that goes along with it. Not everyone is interested or able to pull off the dance, but at a school dance there are typically a few that have mastered their personal version of a dubstep routine that they have likely practiced for hours in front of a mirror at home. A good dub-stepper will gather a audience on the dance floor and become the focal point of the dance. Others will likely try their hand at a watered down version of their own. Good clean fun. If they try grinding to a dub step song, you know you have a grinding problem at school.
Playing all dubstep is not going to work at a school dance, but it is another way for your DJ to mix it up and provide a new, fresh beat and sound to the night’s music mix.

Isn’t it interesting how your job as school administrator allows you the opportunity to learn the newest dance craze. Amazing.
