NATIONAL “DO NOT PLAY” UPDATE 12/5/12

Posted by: admin on 12/05/2012 do not play

We have a record number of additions to the National DO NOT PLAY list this week.  Ten in all.  While popular dance music is moving more toward rock, pop and dubstep the songs that dominate our DO NOT PLAY list are primarily from the HIP HOP, Rap and Rhythmic genre.

One of our Safe Songs, was re-evaluated based on school feedback and now has been moved to the DO NOT PLAY list.   It is Locked out of Heaven by Bruno Mars.  It is definitely  borderline…..but the lyric that has cause issue is the repeated chorus:  ”Your sex takes me to paradise”.

Besides the obvious use of foul language,  school administrators are watching out for song that promote sex, drugs/alcohol and violence.  When screening our song for the Do Not Play list…these are the ones that did not make the grade this month.  Avoid them.

New Bruno Mars Locked out of Heaven “Your sex takes me to paradise”
New      Game Celebration It is all about smoking dope and and drugs….
New The Weekend Wicked Games Some lyrics could be fixed but it is a slow balad so isnt and good any way….
New Lil Wayne No Worries Bad words, promotes drugs, nasty message…no good.  Typical Lil Wayne
New Meek Mill Young and Gettin it It’s not just talking about getting sex, it promotes smoking dope and is foul in oh so many ways
New T.I. / Lil Wayne Ball This  club so packed, these hoes so drunk.  Over and over.
New 2 Chains I’m Different It’s all bad.
New Wiz Khalifa Remember Smoking dope and other rude and unsavory lyrics
New Big Sean Guap Guap is slang for a large amount of money, usually cash and spent on consumer items. Song glorifies using it for all sort of bad things.
New Ludacris-Usher Rest of my life This is actually a great dance song with techno overtones…but it clearly talks about driinks and alcohol…so goes in DNP

Doing a Middle School Holiday Dance at a Private Christian School this past weekend, I had to keep refusing to play Thrift Shop by Macklemore Ft. Wanz because of so many lyrics but with edits it could possibly be playable. You might want to add to your list.

Thanks Kenny. We had not had the song reviewed by our panel yet, because it hadn’t had alot of airplay yet around the country. We will put it before our board this time. My guess is, that it will be added to the DO NOT PLAY list.

    Thanks for your input.

You will DEFINATELY want to review Thrift Shop, which is soaring in popularity. Even though the swear in “this is f***ing awesome” can be edited out, the resulting space can easily be deduced by the listener.

Thanks Brian for the tip on Thrift Shop. I have already sent the song out to our review board for a vote. I agree, it is very likely to come back with a big NO! I appreciate your input.

When my kids asked me to DJ the school dance I said yes! Your site and all the info on trends and what not to play saved me. The kids had fun, the adults had fun and so did I. Thanks for reminding me why DJing is so much fun
